SS Vesta - Schooner Barge
One of a very few personal commissions given to noted maritime artist, Antonio Jacobsen. Dated 1913 (unsigned). This painting of the SS Vesta, a coastal oil tanker of the Standard Oil Company and the Standard Oil Company No. 94 Five Masted Schooner Barge, was commissioned by their Captain, John von Sneidern. It was hand delivered to Captain von Sneidern's house on Staten Island by Jacobsen himself. Even rarer, it is also one of a very few paintings by Jacobsen of this type of vessel. Jacobsen was more noted for his paintings of steam ships. This painting was donated in 1987 to the American Merchant Marine Museum by Captain von Sneidern's grandson, Theodore Loos, a 1944 graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy.
